Andrew’s 2025–2026 season is one of exploration, from Baroque to contemporary: including his first concerts on the viola da gamba; appearances as solo cello of Ensemble Atmosphères; performances with Ensemble ALMAVIVA; programs devoted to Bach and Kurtág with Trio Liberté; solo recitals hosted by Mélotick; chamber music performances in Salle Cortot and La Bibliotheque Grange Fleuret, and appearances as a regular guest cellist with the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France.

Praised as “an artist with a reputation already on the rise and a promising future” (The Well-Tempered Ear), cellist Andrew Briggs performs internationally as a soloist and chamber musician. He has recently appeared in solo and chamber performances at the Bridging Arts Music Festival (Nuremberg, Germany), the Festival de Fontainebleau (France), Opus 16 Concerten (Netherlands), and the Festival Radio France Occitanie Montpellier.

Currently Andrew resides in Paris, France where he is in demand as a solo and collaborative cellist. Initially he moved to Paris as a recipient of the Harriet Hale Woolley Scholarship from the Fondation des États-Unis, where he studied and performed works of Duport, Debussy, and Poulenc. He then moved to the Cité Internationale des Arts where he spent two years on projects featuring the cello works of Beethoven and world music with Ensemble Kimya. Andrew now appears regularly as a soloist and chamber musician across Europe, performing as solo cello of Ensemble Atmosphères and collaborating with orchestras including the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, the Orchestre National d’Île-de-France, and the Orchestre National de Metz.

A dedicated performer of music of all eras, Andrew plays repertoire from Baroque to contemporary. Studying Baroque cello with Phoebe Carrai at The Juilliard School, he performed with the Madison Bach Musicians and as a continuo cellist for UW-Madison’s opera production of Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro. Andrew also enjoys performing contemporary music, appearing in chamber recitals for the Bridging Arts Festival (Nuremberg, Germany), the FOCUS! Contemporary Music Festival, ChamberFest, and with the Axiom Ensemble of The Juilliard School.

Past season highlights include Bachianas Brasileiras No. 5 at the Festival Radio France (Montpellier, France); solo and chamber recitals at the Festival de Fontainebleau; chamber performances with Ensemble Calliopé; and performances of the Dvořák Cello Concerto, La Forêt silencieuse, and Rondo with several orchestras. He has appeared as solo cellist of the Orchestre Symphonique de Bretagne and the Juilliard Chamber Orchestra, performed at Carnegie Hall with the New York String Orchestra Seminar, and appeared as a soloist in the Rising Stars series of the Aspen Music Festival. As a chamber musician he has also performed alongside Gregor Horsch, principal cellist of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra.

Andrew balances his performance career with teaching. As an educator, he was involved with The Juilliard School’s Educational Outreach Department, performing outreach concerts as a Gluck Community Service Fellow and teaching at the Harlem School for the Arts as an Arts Enrichment Fellow. He also taught in the classroom at Juilliard as an Ear Training Teaching Fellow while serving as a mentor for the Juilliard Pre-College String Ensemble. In 2016–2017 Andrew joined the faculty of the University of Wisconsin–Oshkosh as instructor of cello and music business, and performed with the Elmwood String Trio as Artist in Residence. He has since gone on to teach at conservatories in and around Paris while maintaining a private studio.

Andrew graduated from the University of Colorado at Boulder, completing his undergraduate degree in cello performance as the College of Music’s Outstanding Graduate. Studying with Professor Judith Glyde, he won the Honors Competition, leading to performances of the Dvořák Cello Concerto with the CU Symphony and the Longmont Symphony. He attended The Juilliard School as a Master of Music degree student of Richard Aaron, studying chamber music with members of the Juilliard Quartet, the Beaux Arts Trio, and the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. He later completed his Doctoral studies at the University of Wisconsin–Madison as a student of Uri Vardi. His doctoral project, Piatti and the Body: An Integrative Approach to Learning the 12 Caprices, Op. 25, can be found on YouTube. Andrew has benefited from private study and master classes with Ralph Kirshbaum, Steven Isserlis, Paul Katz, Frans Helmerson, Lluis Claret, Philippe Muller, Gary Hoffman, Ophélie Gaillard, Gregor Horsch, Michel Strauss, Diana Ligeti, and Xavier Gagnepain.
